A class of Elementary School students published a paper about Bees in the BiologyLetters journal. This study, Lotto admitted, was not sophisticated enough to be published in a top-tier journal. The students did not consult existing scientific literature or perform complicated statistical analyses. But as someone who had previously studied perception in bees, he knew that it was original, high-quality research. It also, Lotto added, flew in the face of some funding agencies that had turned down the project based on the idea young people cannot do real science.
There have been a number of riots around London England. Part of ongoing Credit Crisis 2008, Revolts Of 2011, or both? Commentators have attributed the causes of the riots to factors including high Poverty and UnEmployment, the growing gap between rich and poor, gang culture, and the lowest social mobility (Income Mobility) in the developed world. Stowe Boyd looks at Debra Myerson's thinking on Swift Trust among temporary teams. (Team Work) Proposition 3. Inconsistent role behavior and “blurring” of roles will lead to a slower build of trust. This presumes that role blurring heightens uncertainty. People who exhibit inconsistent role behavior raise questions about what they will do with whatever is entrusted to them. Attempts to answer these questions slow the development of trust. (more)
Steven Johnson on the coolness of being able to link to a specific book-page (e.g. from an original Joseph Priestley book) in Google Book Search. But what you can see happening, slowly but surely, is the Memex and Xanadu and the Information Superhighway - all those inspiring dreams of information utopia - finally crossing crossing over into the vast universe of books. Slowly, over time, a page typeset in 1771 might start to get a whole new life, thanks to the growing authority we grant it through that elemental gesture of making a link. I Commented on the irony of his own book having to wait to go out of print before it will fall under the Google Book SearchSettlement. (Information Ecosystem Roadmap)
Weird Wiki thought Of The Day. Search engines skip lots of wiki-based pages when returning results because so many words are subsumed into a WikiWord. You search for "Radio" or "Radio Userland" and my wiki pages say Radio Userland. Like some other wikis, I explode WikiNames in each pages 'title' tag. But what if we did it for every occurence of every WikiWord in the page? Might be too non-standard for me to do it myself, and I don't know how many wikis care about public access. (more)

The recently-departed co-founders of Twitter - Evan Williams, Biz Stone and Jason Goldman - now working together again under the old Obvious Corp name, announced their latest product today, a stealth alpha app called Lift. It's described as a way to help users achieve their goals through positive reinforcement. It sounds like Twitter in its simplicity and from what I've seen it looks a lot like Twitter too, but with more structure. (Self Improvement) The Mibbles team (Tony Stubblebine and Jon Crosby) has been working with Obvious all Summer and the service itself appears to have been under active development since at least the spring. The website underwent a dramatic redesign to take on its snazzy new look just a few weeks ago, by which time it was already renamed as Lift.
